Peace Day celebrations in Salzburg, 2013
On the United Nations' International Day of Peace in 2013, we are once again at a critical point in world politics, where decisions will be made about war and peace. it is even more important that we reaffirm our commitment to a global culture and global peace - for a world without national, religious and ideological boundaries where the values of peace, justice and sustainability are generally desired and recognized.
In the words of the Charter of the United Nations, we are "in the faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small... to practice tolerance and peace, live with one another as good neighbours and unite our forces to international peace... "
Not only the scourge of war is threatening the lives of millions of innocent beings, we are still facing other large and potentially catastrophic crises: environmental degradation, climate change, water scarcity, just to name a few. We should be aware that we are members of a larger community of life on this planet and for that reason have a moral and spiritual responsibility not only for all people but also for animals and nature.
At any time, people were striving for peace, regardless of culture, religion or political affiliation. Peace is the common aspiration of all. Tolerance, love, understanding and respect are the universal forces that will unite all mankind.
I pray to God for the health and welfare of all living beings. May God protect our beautiful world and all who live in it lead to peace and light.
